There are a few reasons we want you to be 15 minutes early for your spa appointment, but the best one is so that you have some time to relax in our infrared saunas. Infrared saunas are said to have pain relieving, detoxifying, and even weight loss benefits! Saunas are also known to help with chronic fatigue, seasonal mood disorder, stress relief, and sinus infections. Infrared sauna sessions are by appointment only, so be sure and let us know you want to try our Infrared Sauna, you'll be glad you did!
Before entering the sauna, it is important to hydrate fully. It is recommended you drink 12-16 ounces of water both before and after sauna use. Our relaxation room is stocked with fresh glasses and cold water, so that you can drink a glass of water prior to use. You do not need to shower before entering the sauna, but we recommend you do not apply any lotion or creams prior. We ask that you sit on a towel inside the sauna. Temperature is set between 100-140 degrees. Beginners might feel more comfortable at the lower range, and you should never feel uncomfortable while using the sauna. After your session in the sauna, you can head over to our beautiful showers to remove the sweat and toxins prior to your appointment.
Skin Wellness: Infrared Saunas are a perfect pre-facial treat, as the sauna will soften your skin and open your pores, allowing products to further penetrate the skin. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy¹ showed significant improvements in skin appearance after just 12 weeks of sauna skin therapy using near-infrared technology. Participants experienced a reduction in wrinkles and crow’s feet, as well as improved overall skin tone, including softness, smoothness, elasticity, clarity and firmness. Infrared saunas can help with acne because they make you sweat. As sweat flows through your skin glands it "flushes” out dirt, bacteria and dead skin cells. Detoxification: Thousands of environmental toxins saturate every aspect of our living environment. These toxins are unavoidable and are often absorbed into our bodies. Since humans are bio-accumulators, the large quantities and numerous types of toxins we are exposed to overwhelm our bodies’ ability to metabolize and get rid of them naturally and thereby accumulate in our bodies. The infrared Sauna allows us to sweat out some of those accumulated toxins.
Sweating without Respiratory issues: Infrared is used to heat objects in the sauna, instead of the air. Traditional saunas are very hot and can make it difficult to breathe, the infrared sauna permeates heat like the sun directly into the body, whereas the traditional sauna first heats the room, the outside of the body, and then inside.
Infrared Sauna Precautions:
Saunas & Medications: Individuals who are using prescription drugs should seek the advice of their personal physician or a pharmacist for possible changes in the drugs effect when the body is exposed to infrared waves or elevated body temperature. Diuretics, barbiturates and beta-blockers may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms. Anticholinergics such as amitryptaline may inhibit sweating and can predispose individuals to heat rash or to a lesser extent, heat stroke. Some over-the-counter drugs, such as antihistamines, may also cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke.
Saunas & Children or the Elderly. The core body temperature of children rises much faster than adults, and the ability to maintain core body temperature decreases with age. Children under the age of 16 should never use the sauna unsupervised and should use a lower temperature. Elderly clients have decreased sweat gland function and should operate the sauna at a lower temperature, for no more than 15 minutes at a time.
Saunas & Cardiovascular Conditions. Individuals with cardiovascular conditions or problems (hypertension / hypo tension), congestive heart failure, impaired coronary circulation or those who are taking medications which might affect blood pressure should exercise caution when exposed to prolonged heat.
Saunas & Pregnancy. Can you use an infrared sauna while pregnant? NO. Pregnant women should NOT use an infrared sauna in any way, shape or form for any period of time. Exposing a pregnant woman to extreme heat is not a good idea in any environment. We definitely don’t want to do this on purpose. Extreme heat can cause contractions to start. The increased temperatures can increase the risks for birth defects or fetal damage. A pregnant woman should never use a sauna. This is a major infrared sauna safety concern.
Additional concerns and contraindications to Infrared saunas: Fever, Hemophiliacs, those with insensitivity to heat, clients with reduced ability to sweat or perspire, alcohol abuse, joint injuries, implants, and pacemakers.
